(Toronto, ON – January 17, 2022) – After almost 8 years since their 2014 release Glory Under Dangerous Skies, Canadian rockers Moist have shared their highly anticipated full-length End of The Ocean. Listen to the album here.

To coincide with the album release, the band shared a nostalgic video for the album opener track “Ammunition.” Created by Moist bass player Jeff Pearce, the video is composed of old touring footage from throughout the years, showing the band in their element. The song is dedicated to their long lasting fans. Moist explain the inspiration behind the accompanying video, saying, “It’s about the people that keep you going when you face challenges, large or small. They may be people you turn to for advice or solace, they may be the core reason you do what you do in life, a reserve of inner strength you depend on, or your last, best defence against anyone or anything that stands in the way of the goal you want to achieve. When we started to work on the video, which features so many amazing shots of the audience through the years, we started to feel like the “you” was collective for the band, and “ammunition” meant the audience. It feels like we get so much energy and strength from the people we perform for and that that is our collective ammunition.”

End of the Ocean  is all about peeling away layers,” explains Moist lead guitarist Mark Makoway who produced and mixed the album, “removing the bells and whistles and capturing the power and soul of Moist performing in a room. We didn’t rely on ‘studio magic’ – we went after something raw and visceral. In many ways, the making of  End of the Ocean was about searching for the beautiful imperfections that make the presentation special.”

Lyrically, many of the songs on this, Moist’s fifth full-length studio record, were inspired by our society’s tendency for limitless consumption as a means of filling some unfillable void at the expense of our sense of self and collective well-being. But  End of the Ocean itself is a sparse, powerful musical document that relies heavily on the band’s uniquely democratic writing process and a collective desire for connection that’s characterized the personal musical bonds the band members have formed with each other and their audience over time.

Founded in 1993, Moist was propelled to prominence on the strength of their debut album, Silver, and the uniquely powerful alt-rock anthems “Push”, “Silver”, and “Believe Me”. Like Silver, the band’s follow up records – Creature (1996) and Mercedes Five and Dime (1999) – went on to achieve multi-platinum sales (over 1.3 million albums worldwide) and yielded more chart-topping hits including “Resurrection”, “Tangerine”, “Gasoline”, “Breathe”, and “Underground”.

(Toronto, ON – June 4, 2021) – Earlier this year, alt-rock group MOIST announced their return with their forthcoming full-length End of The Ocean due October 1 via Known Accomplice, their first album since 2014’s Glory Under Dangerous Skies. Building on the themes of past tracks “Tarantino” and the album’s title track “End Of The Ocean”, “Put The Devil On It” continues to take a close look at the forces that have consumed our attention of late with a critical look at modern life. Lead singer David Usher discusses his inspiration for the song saying, “What a tragic comedy the last 4 years have been. He who shall not be named has wiped away that thin layer of civility. The mirage. Out in the light, the ugly truth. They aren’t hiding anymore, so neither can we. Go team science! Put the devil on it.”

“Put The Devil On It” follows’ previously released album singles “End Of The Ocean” and “Tarantino,” both accompanied by incredible cinematic videos.

“Produced and mixed by lead guitarist Mark Makoway, End Of The Ocean also features original members; lead singer Davis Usher, Keyboardist Kevin Young, Bassist Jeff Pearce as well as rhythm guitarist Jonathan Gallivan and drummer Francis Fillion.

MOIST ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF FIRST NEW ALBUM SINCE 2014 – END OF THE OCEAN

The video is adapted from the film OFF WORLD (2009), which was directed by Mateo Guez, filmed on location at Smokey Mountain in the Philippines, and narrated by lead singer, David Usher. When the band was working on the creative for the video for “End of the Ocean”, a song which discusses peak consumption and its devastating results on the planet, Moist keyboardist, Kevin Young, referenced OFF WORLD, recalling how closely the film’s themes and imagery matched “End of the Ocean”. David quickly put an edit together and shared it with Mateo – who loved the video and the idea of these two elements coming together – and the emotionally charged and beautiful music video was born.

With “End of the Ocean” Moist take another biting and critical look at modern life, with a video that reflects on the end result of our disposable lifestyle and a song that reflects on how quickly technology in our culture is moving and the impact it has both on us and our planet.

Lead singer David Usher expands on the track and album’s theme: “I live in analogue, trained to trust in feeling. And I live in technology, in love with my new shiny objects. These days it feels like we’re constantly racing, dealing with an endless stream of data, our days stuffed with online meetings, and passwords, and Netflix, and unsocial media, and always more stuff – a material culture on speed.

The song “End of the Ocean” came from a dream, and that seeded the album. A place at the end, where we came tumbling out of the whirlwind, rolling ass over head – we looked up, and it all stopped. It was a place we could just sit and watch quietly as it all crashed down around us. There was nothing left to do but breathe it in and look to the ones we love.

Usher references the latest trend in technology, Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs), reminding us of the often unforeseen, environmental consequences of our desire for something shiny and new, saying: “Can we just slow down on the love affair with the NFT’s, at least until we can make them climate-neutral? The greatest irony would be if artists and their art are the catalysts that lead the world to embrace a new unsustainable economy. Right now, until Ethereum switches its model from proof of work to proof of stake, NFT’s are the new oil business; a gold rush for people making money at the expense of the planet. The blockchain is definitely the future, but as the world accelerates we need to be constantly thinking about the ecosystems we’re building, and that they are sustainable.” For additional information please read more here and here.

“End of the Ocean” follows “Tarantino”, the album’s first single, which was released in late January with an accompanying video adapted from the National Film Board of Canada short, Caterpillarplasty and re-edited by director David Barlow-Krelina. The video, which has since racked up over 100k views on YouTube, is a powerful and sardonic take on society’s unrelenting obsession with beauty and perfection.

Produced and mixed by lead guitarist, Mark Makoway, End of the Ocean also features the band’s original bass player, Jeff Pearce (who rejoined Moist for their 2019 25th Silver Anniversary tour), as well as rhythm guitarist Jon Gallivan and drummer Francis Fillion.

(Toronto, ON – January 29, 2021) – Recorded remotely in lockdown by band members in their homes in Toronto and Montreal, and assembled and mixed by Moist guitarist and producer, Mark Makoway, “Tarantino” is Moist’s first new release since their 2014 album, Glory Under Dangerous Skies.

The song tells a story of a life of meaningless excess. Singer David Usher explains “The first lockdown sent me on a Quentin Tarantino binge and the song came out of a dream sparked by those images where we have lost all sense of ourselves – where there are no limits on our consumption and all we want is more. We deconstruct and reconstruct ourselves to fill an unfillable void and we just eat ourselves alive, and somehow, we still can’t wake up.”

The accompanying visual, adapted from the National Film Board of Canada short, Caterpillarplasty, is a grotesque sci-fi satire that lifts plastic surgery and trans-species body dysmorphia to another level. Re-edited for “Tarantino” by acclaimed director David Barlow-Krelina, the short film is a powerful and sardonic take on how society’s unrelenting obsession with beauty has spiraled out of control. This video will get under your skin.

Usher discovered the short film while perusing the internet after “Tarantino” was completed: “When I saw the long version of Caterpillarplasty it fit perfectly with the vision for the song. The endless desire to remodel and upgrade ourselves, hoping the remaking of our appearance will somehow solve our existential turmoil.”

“When David Usher first got in touch with me about making a Moist music video using footage from Caterpillarplasty, we started making connections between the film and his work in AI and with digital humans. I had initially conceived of the film in a way that relied heavily on music to set the emotional tone of the piece, so it was a great pleasure for me to reimagine the timing and the flow to an entirely different vibe.” – David Barlow-Krelina

Born in 1988 in Ottawa, David Barlow-Krelina graduated from Concordia University in film animation and computation arts.
